Members are urged to check the mail they receive after a BID business spotted they were getting post for a similarly named business.

Checking records at Companies House, they found an individual had set up a new company using a very similar name and their registered address. The same person had set up more than 40 companies across the UK, always using a business name close to one registered at a given address.

This is a common scam as verification of details are not required when setting up a new company. Scammers often go on to use these companies to acquire goods and services that the original business may have to prove were not for them.

The Government is currently changing the process to make the system more robust but if this happens to you, you can report the incident to Action Fraud, and ask Companies House to amend the information.
